What is eWIC?

Picture
The North Carolina WIC Program has moved from a paper-based method of WIC benefit issuance to an electronic benefit transfer system (eWIC). Instead of paper food instruments, WIC food benefits are issued into an electronic benefit account at the local WIC clinic. Families use their eWIC card and PIN to access their food benefits at the grocery store.

WIC Income Guidelines

Once the size and gross income of the economic unit (or household) have been determined and documented, staff use the poverty income guidelines included in the chart below to determine income eligibility. The guidelines are published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

Breastfeeding

Research has shown that there is no better food than breast milk for a baby’s first year of life. Breastfeeding provides many health, nutritional, economical and emotional benefits to mother and baby. The WIC Program and the American Academy of Pediatrics support breastfeeding as the preferred method of infant feeding during the first six months to one year of life.

Why Is Breastfeeding Good For Your Baby?

  • It provides a special bonding experience between mother and baby
  • It supplies all the necessary nutrients in the proper proportions
  • It protects against allergies, sickness, and obesity
  • It protects against diseases, like diabetes and cancer
  • It protects against infections, like ear infections
  • It is easily digested – no constipation, diarrhea or upset stomach
  • It is good for the environment and saves you money
  • Babies have healthier weights as they grow

How Our Trained Staff Can Help You.

Our goal at WIC is to provide mothers the assistance and support they need to successfully breastfeed their baby!

Staff members have completed the NCLETP (North Carolina Lactation Educator Program) and continue to receive training to provide up to date information to our breastfeeding moms who have concerns or questions along the way.
In addition, we also offer a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) Program wherein a WIC staff member offers breastfeeding support and addresses common breastfeeding concerns in a one on one setting.  BFPC’s can provide ongoing breastfeeding support around the clock!

Staff members also manage a Breast Pump Loan Program to WIC mothers who qualify.

We Offer FREE Breastfeeding Classes

We offer free breastfeeding classes to both WIC clients and anyone in the general public!  Our classes will be offered monthly and will cover topics such as: benefits of breastfeeding, breastfeeding basics, positioning, latching, and how to know if your baby is getting enough.
Please call 828-649-3531 for more information, class schedule and to sign up for a class!
